International Dragon Boat Festival in Ithaca!

This Saturday, July 9, Ithaca will host the 2011 International Dragon Boat Festival, a multicultural celebration and world class racing event with top teams from across the Eastern US and Canada.  The Dragon Boat Festival is a 2000 year-old tradition that began as a community celebration of culture but has since evolved into an international celebration.  Cities across the globe host the festival with the intention to promote, educate, and celebrate Asian cultures and heritage, as well as to highlight the local culture and organizations of each host community.

In the heart of the Finger Lakes, this year’s festival is bound to be as enchanting and exciting as only Ithaca can be.  The event is sponsored and hosted by the Ithaca Asian American Association and will take place in Ithaca’s Cass Park along the gorgeous waters of Cayuga Lake.

Bring the whole family to cheer on teams of all ages and experience levels, including women, men, breast cancer survivors, youth, and local community divisions, as they race for first, second, and third place medals.  The race begins at 8:45 AM and ends with an awards ceremony at 6:30 PM.  Performances and festivities begin at 10:30 AM and continue with plenty of activities to enjoy as you watch the race throughout the day.  Don’t miss the “Eye-Dotting Ceremony” at noon, where local dignitaries “awaken” the spirits of the dragons to commemorate an ancient Chinese tradition and pave the way for future racing success.  See the event schedule for more details.

If you live in Ithaca, are interested in learning about one of the fastest growing team sports in the world, and are looking for a fun way to exercise your body, mind, and soul, consider joining the Ithaca Dragon Boat Club.
