Lavender, Blueberries, and Paddleboarding in the Finger Lakes!

All summer long, locals and visitors can be found throughout the Finger Lakes region hiking the gorges, sipping samples of local wine, and swimming along the shores of the sparkling lakes.  While wineries, gorges, and lakes are the heart of the region, the sweetest taste of what the Finger Lakes have to offer is often found in the subtle gems tucked along the way.  Consider the worthwhile possibilities of what you might not find in your guide books.

Just to name a few…

Lavender Crest Farm
On a hill overlooking the east side of Keuka Lake in Penn Yan, New York, fields of lavender will intoxicate your senses as you tour the gardens that David and Sharon Sweet have been tending for six years.  Known for their “Grosso” and “Super” varieties that have 36″ to 48″ spikes of lavender flowers and contain a high volume of “essential oil,” the Sweets specialize in spa quality varieties that flourish in the Finger Lakes region.  Browse the farm cart at their farm entrance Monday through Thursday from 9AM until dusk for fresh cut lavender, dried lavender, lavender soap, lavender plants and other lavender items for sale.  Visitors are invited to tour the farm, located on the corner of Bath Road and Second Milo, on Fridays and Saturdays from 9AM until 5PM in July, when lavender is in bloom.

Serendipity Farms
If you have the good fortune to stumble upon this organic blueberry farm while traveling through the Finger Lakes, you found one of the region’s sweet spots.  John and Stacey McGregor moved onto the 35-acre Serendipity Farms in 2010 and offer four acres of organically-grown high bush blueberries that were planted over forty years ago.  Located on Chubb Hollow Road in Penn Yan, the farm is open dawn until dusk during the season.  Fill your buckets with Finger Lakes fresh blueberries for $1.50 per pound!
