The Erie Canal in the Finger Lakes Region:
The Heart of New York State

 
 
     The Erie Canal in the Finger Lakes Region provides general information about the Erie Canal and specific information about the canal in Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga and Onondaga counties. The Prologue discusses the proposals to build waterways during the 100 years preceding the canal’s completion in 1825. The Introduction provides a brief history of the building of the canal. Also incErie_Canal_Bk2.jpg (29316 bytes)luded in the book are short biographies of seven people who were instrumental in planning and building the canal, eight stories depicting life on the canal, and a description and brief history of the villages along the canal in the region.

    The book also contains information about places to see and things to do along a thirty-mile-wide strip across the northern section of the Finger Lakes Region.

    In the New York State Canal Recreationway Plan, fifteen miles is described as the distance a hiker might walk in a day or a biker or boater might travel in a half-day, one way.
