The Cayuga Museum, located on Genesee Street in Auburn, NY, operates through three buildings- the Willard Case mansion, the Case Research Lab and the Carriage House Theater.

The Cayuga Museum’s Case Research Lab is the birthplace of sound on film The Lab has a permanent exhibit of Theodore Case’s workings in his 20th century laboratory.This is where he invented the first commercially successful system of sound on film in 1922. 

 

The Willard Case mansion is where visitorscan view rotating and permanent displays of local art, history of Cayuga County, public programs and it holds thousands of artifacts, archives and photographs from the Finger Lakes region. It also holds the entire collection and archives of the Case Research Lab. The Cayuga Museum’s Case Research Lab is the birthplace of sound on film. The Lab has a permanent exhibit of Theodore Case’s workings in his 20th century laboratory.This is where he invented the first commercially successful system of sound on film in 1922. The Carriage House Theater, the site where some of the first sound films were created, was renovated in 1850 and now operates as a multi-arts space. The stage is now used for live music, museum programs, and community events.
