WHERE TO STAY IN THE FINGER LAKES

Eleven Finger Lakes embed the landscape of western upstate New York, surrounded by rolling vineyards, hundreds of waterfalls, stunning gorges, and quaint towns and villages.

WHERE TO BEGIN?

When choosing where to stay, consider how you plan to spend your time in the Finger Lakes. Possibilities are endless, but they should not be overwhelming.Narrow it down. You will want to savor the region’s delights one lake a time–(maybe two!).

THINGS TO DO IN THE FINGER LAKES

WINE TASTING

Cayuga, Seneca and Keuka lakes are surrounded by wineries and wine trails, as well as some breweries, cideries and distilleries. Reserve a wine tour, or designate a driver to explore the wine trails around Finger Lakes Wine Country.

SUGGESTIONS:
Ithaca – Cayuga and Seneca Lake Wine Trails
Geneva – Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga Lake Wine Trails
Watkins Glen – Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka Lake Wine Trails
Penn Yan – Keuka and Seneca Lake Wine Trails
Hammondsport – Home to the 1st federally-licensed winery in the US.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

If your goal is to relax and getaway, find comfort in a quiet cottage by the lake, sleep under the stars (or in a glamorous tent), or reserve a place devoted to well-being in a quaint town away from the crowds.

SUGGESTIONS:
Hammondsport
– Quiet town on the southern shores of Keuka Lake
Aurora –  Charming lakeside village and home to the Inns of Aurora.
Ithaca – Stroll botanic gardens, the Waterfront Trail, or sit by the lake with a good book.
Geneva – Treat yourself to Isabella Spa & Salon
Skaneateles – Lakefront village with historic charm

I WANT TO DO IT ALL

You want it all–to hike all morning, visit museums, cute shops and some waterfalls in the afternoon, clean up for a nice dinner and theater in the evening, and then drift off in a comfy bed, cushy tent, or private rental to wake up refreshed the next morning for a full day on the wine trail.

SUGGESTIONS:
Ithaca
– culture, wineries, and outdoor fun
Geneva – culture, wineries, and outdoor fun
Watkins Glen – shops, restaurants, hiking, boating
Corning – Lively Historic District, Corning Museum of Glass, shops, food & more
Skaneateles
– Lakefront village, shops, restaurants, park
Seneca Falls – Museums, shops, Cayuga Lake State Park

I WANT TO STAY IN A “MORE LIVELY” TOWN

For a true “big city” experience, you may prefer Rochester and Syracuse just outside of the Finger Lakes Region. If small-town “city feel” with lively culture, restaurants, and shops will do, these larger cities in the Finger Lakes have city charm, while still offering easy access to wineries, parks and waterfalls:

SUGGESTIONS:
Ithaca – College town, lodging, shops, waterfalls, parks, wineries
Geneva – North end of Seneca Lake, hotels, parks, wineries
Corning – Lively Historic District, Corning Museum of Glass, shops

For smaller picturesque villages, visit Seneca Falls, Hammondsport, Skaneateles or Penn Yan. Regardless of where you choose to spend your nights, most cities, towns, and villages in the region are a short driving distance from one another, so you can experience a little of everything.
